RE-ESTABLISHING INTIMATE ARCHITECTURE AND RELATIONSHIP ARCHITECTURE IN THE
BOARDING SCHOOL OF LA MARTINIÈRE DIDEROT IN LYON.
Boarding schools, between collective and personal life, are “in-between” spaces which are
victims of their strict organisation. Relationship to oneself, to the others, or to space is prevented
from thriving. How can we favour intimate architecture in collective space? What if intimacy,
defined in this context as a link created between two entities, could allow us to recover these
relationships?
Meeting with the boarding students and listening to their aspirations guided the intervention in this
building. My intention is to create a gradation of space by designing areas of different proximity
with the others as in a village. This gradation will be made possible thanks to platforms of different
heights as well as to the porosity of the walls, playing with closed or open panels. The aim is to
give the inhabitants the choice to be close to others and to allow them to appropriate their living
spaces.
